Natural Dye Workshop with Sofia Fernandez Diaz and Emma Warren

This one day workshop will introduce beginner dyers to the concepts and practices of natural dyeing. Explore the history of how different cultures have used natural dyes in the past and how contemporary dyers continue to use them today in an effort to minimize environmental impact and encourage a healthier and more holistic approach to textile design.

We’ll experiment with several dye baths, including food waste vats using avocado pits and red onion skins, an indigo vat, and a vat made with Mexican cochineal bugs.

Sofia Fernandez Diaz is an artist from Mexico City. She is based in Oaxaca, Mexico where she continues her search and experimentation with materials, color and traditional artisanal techniques. She specializes in making natural pigments and dyes.

Emma Warren is a textile and clothing designer based in downtown Burlington. Her work focuses on small batch and one of a kind goods that are handmade, hand woven and hand dyed using natural materials and environmentally conscious practices.
